ELEMANO™ FAQ
Q. What is the Double Cuff method?
A. The double cuff method has two separate air bags and each air bag performs different roles. The big air bag stops the blood flow, and the small air bag detects pulse oscillatory. By separating these functions, the quality of the pulse detection becomes more specific to measure blood pressure of patients who have hypotension and a weak pulse.
Q. Why does the cuff have to be positioned correctly?
A. When you use a conventional digital BP monitor, you do not need to place the cuff on top of the artery since it detects the pulse oscillatory by the entire cuff. However, since ELEMANO detects pulse by the small cuff, it requires the cuff to be positioned on top of the artery for an accurate measurement. This placement gives it its accuracy.
Q. Why is it recommended to pressurize 30 mmHg to 40 mmHg higher than expected SYS?
A. After pressurization, ELEMANO automatically checks to see that no pulse signal is detected for seconds before it starts the reading. In order to make sure that there is no pulse signal, it is important to pressurize high enough to avoid an error. There is always a possibility that the blood pressure of the patient is higher than usual after walking and/or talking.
Q. Should I use the monitor and inflate the cuff when the cuff is not an arm?
A. No you should not. You will not get a read because ELEMANO is not detecting any measurements.
Q. What is the Exhaust valve on the large cuff for and do I use it after I inflate the cuff to get a read?
A. The exhaust valve on the large cuff is there to exhaust the cuff after you get the reading. Do not use the valve after you have inflated the cuff as the monitor automatically is exhausting. After the reading there may be more air in the cuff. The valve will assist in removing all of the air in the cuff quickly. Also do not use the valve in auscultation mode. The monitor will provide the numbers on the panel as it is exhausting automatically, but in this mode you will not get an automatic read-out because you are using a stethoscope.
Q. Can I use ELEMANO for cardiac tests to replace the cardiac monitors when my patient is on a treadmill?
A. No, ELEMANO can be used before and after the cardiac test, but not during the process in which the patient is moving on the treadmill. ELEMANO has specific engineering to catch an accurate read when the patient is relaxed with the arm positioned at heart level.
Q. Are there any patients who are difficult to measure blood pressure?
A. The patients difficult to measure are those with a very weak pulse, very low blood pressure, those with extreme hypotension with shock, arrhythmia, severe blood pressure fluctuation, and children who constantly move during measurement. Also patients who intake anticoagulant, steroid, and anti blood platelet are difficult to measure.
Q. What happens if the device shuts down during the measurement?
A. As soon as power shuts down, the air in the bladder would be exhausted.
Q. What do I need to do if ELEMANO is on silent mode?
A. If you press the "Mode" button for 2 seconds when the device is on normal mode, it will be changed to "silent mode", and the sign "buz off" will appear on the panel.
If you press the "Mode" button for 2 seconds again, the panel will indicate "buz on". The product when purchased defaults to “buz on”.
Q. Can ELEMANO measure blood pressure by thigh?
A. It is designed to be used on the upper arm. If you want to measure by femoral area, there may be a difference in results between automatic and auscultation mode. So please measure by auscultation mode.
Q. What happens if the Exh. button is pushed during measurement?
A. If you push the “Exh” Button during measurement when it's on the normal or slow modes, it will indicate the warning of "error" or "over".
In auscultation mode, the pressure would be decreased abruptly. The “Exh” button should be used for emergency situation.
Q. What happens if I use too big or too small cuff?
A. If a smaller size cuff is used, there may be a higher reading than using an appropriate size cuff because a smaller cuff may not be able to stop bloodstream for an adequate period of time. If a larger size cuff is used, the results may fluctuate because there is more air in the air bag and it could dim the pulse wave.
Q. Is the device waterproof?
A. Both the main body and cuff are not waterproof. The main body contains precision equipment, so when it is cleaned, the cloth must be damp and squeezed well to remove excess moisture before it is used on the device.
Q. What is the "O" indication on the cuff cover?
A. This is to show where the small air bag (pulse sensor) is located in the cuff. It is important to position the small air bag above the artery for accurate measurement.
Q. Why may it be difficult to apply pressure to the cuff over time?
A. ELEMANO may have a clogged air filter in inflation bulb or there may be deterioration in the bulb. In case of a clogged air filter, it needs to be cleaned. If the inflation bulb has deteriorated, replace it with a new bulb.
Q. Can ELEMANO be used on babies? From what age can we use it?
A. The SS size cuff (arm circumference: 13 to 20cm) is applicable to 3 to 10 years of age.
Q. What if customers say that the results are different by mode?
A. There is a possibility of blood pressure fluctuation. If that is the case, please tell them to measure again when the patient is at rest using the auscultation mode.
Q. Can ELEMANO be used in ambulance?
A. Yes, however, fierce vibrations could affect the pulse, which may make it difficult to measure on the automatic mode. In that case, measure at the auscultation mode.
Q. Can ELEMANO be used on an airplane?
A. This device complies with EMC standard (IEC60601-1-2 1993). ELEMANO can be used under the complied situation; however, Terumo has no special approval for using on airplane. Fierce vibrations could affect the pulse reading and it may be difficult to measure on the automatic modes. In that case, measure in auscultation mode.
Q. Why does it indicate "LOW "(under pressure indicator) on the ELEMANO?
A. In case of using a conventional blood pressure monitor (BPM), many healthcare professionals pressurize only systolic + 10 to 20mmHg. If workers do the same with ELEMANO, they will likely get a "LOW" indication. ELEMANO must be held from the front, with the hand grasping the molding at the webbing of the hand, in between the thumb and the index finger. Do not hold from the back of the monitor or your inflation time will be extended and likelihood of stopping too early may occur.
Q. If the “LOW” indicator, “0” and “Memo” are on my display at the same time how do I get rid of this reading and clear the panel?
A. You do not clear the panel. Keep the cuff on the patient and continue to inflate the cuff at +30 to 40 mmHg above expected systolic so ELEMANO can catch a read.
Q. If the “LOW” indicator is displayed on my monitor from the last read when I pick it up to use it will it give me a read-out?
A. When the indication is on the display you can still begin the measurement. The process will override the last read to provide a new measurement and read-out.
Q. As I am inflating the bulb will the monitor delay until I start seeing numbers on the display panel?
A. When ELEMANO is held properly the total inflation time is estimated at 5 seconds. The panel will appear blank initially as the air is being pumped into the cuff, but the numbers will appear once the cuff begins to inflate. Continue to pressurize 30 mmHg to 40 mmHg higher than expected systolic.
Q. What is the small beep during measurement?
A. It is the driving sound of the air deflation control part. It indicates that the device is deflating properly.
Q. Can the last read be deleted?
A. No. ELEMANO will indicate the last read when it is turned on. This function allows the healthcare worker to refer to the last reading.
Q. Does ELEMANO have the backlight function?
A. It does not have the back light function because this function consumes a lot of energy and consumes the battery life quickly.
Q. How many reads can ELEMANO get with a new battery?
A. If used continuously under the situation of 77 degrees Fahrenheit, circumference of 28cm, pressurized up to 180mmHg
Alkaline cell: approx. 1,000 reads
Q. Disinfecting or cleaning the main body
A. Main body, bladder, and latex parts can be wiped with a gauze with disinfectant solution: Chlorhexidine gluconate, Benzalkonium chloride. The cuff cover is washable.
Q. Can the cuff covers be washed?
A. Yes. You can wash them with neutral detergent.
Q. Can the cuff covers be sterilized?
A. We recommend EOG (ethylene oxide gas) sterilization.
Q. Can the cuff cover be sterilized by autoclave?
A. The cuff cover may shrink or change the color. It should not affect ELEMANO’s function if the covers are autoclaved. However, Terumo is not responsible for any damage caused by autoclave.
